A lot of people ask us where our name comes from. So, here’s the story. It’s a backstory.
It all started in the Spring of 1986 when we met as students in NYC. For more than 37 years, we’ve been on a life path together. Together, we’ve lived in 7 places. We’ve traveled together on trains, by car, by plane, and by boat. We’ve been across the U.S., around Europe, and to remote tropical islands. We’ve probably eaten close to 50,000 meals together. Together, we’ve loved and lost 3 cats. We’ve had countless parties and laughed endlessly with a circle of friends. We’ve experienced every emotion possible with each other and shared secrets that nobody else knows. We started and still run a family business together. And we came together to be parents of a daughter, who almost didn’t make it (more than 19 years ago). We’ve shared a mutual love of all things art & culture, especially music. And for all that time, Phil has been creating songs that have become a soundtrack for our life together. Beautiful, virtuosic songs. He played them in our homes. He recorded them as solo demos and with bands. He made acoustic versions, electric versions, played every instrument, and played a singular guitar. He played them for me when we first met, and kept sharing them with me every step of the way. I’ve had the privilege and honor to be invited to practices, to gigs, and on tours. On occasion, I’d help with recording, mixing, and the packaging of collections to release into the world. But they were his creative work and I had mine. In 2017, we started playing together. I picked up a guitar after years of dabbling and through Phil’s music (and patient mentoring), we found a sound. Well, it was there all along. I knew every note and word already, because I knew every song. More importantly, though, we knew each other. Playing music together was probably our biggest uncharted frontier as partners. One that we had never truly experienced before - even after 30+ years and hours and hours of music throughout our life. It seemed like spontaneous magic, but it was just waiting to come out at the right moment. The name “The FlipCharts” represents that story. Flip is a nickname for guys named Phil. And we are playing Phil’s vast collection of songs (his “charts”) in a new way. And, as for me, well, I’m well-known for my love of charting ideas on paper - and for using actual flipcharts a lot! Duover is a collection of the songs we’ve re-imagined from Phil’s body of work together. It’s also a way to honor and share how we got here, with early solo versions, alternate recordings, photos & art, and versions done by other bands from Phil’s past. We hope you’ll enjoy following along as we release songs over time. - Ennis (aka Charts) |
